But if Catullus was born in 77, he would have been seventeen years younger at the very least than Lucretius : and if we take Donatus' account, Lucretius would have been twenty-two when Catullus first saw the light. Again as Virgil was born in 70, Catullus, born in 87, would then have been seventeen years old; a disparity quite in accordance with the fact that they represent two literary eras: whereas if Catullus only preceded Virgil's birth seven years, the floruit of the former would almost synchronize with the publication of the Eclogues which determined the reputation of the latter.
