By George A. Olah

The interesting autobiographical reflections of Nobel Prize winner George Olah How did a tender guy who grew up in Hungary among the 2 global Wars move from cleansing rubble and relocating pianos on the finish of worldwide conflict II within the Budapest Opera condominium to profitable the Nobel Prize in Chemistry? George Olah takes us on a notable trip from Budapest to Cleveland to Los Angeles-with a stopover in Stockholm, after all. An cutting edge scientist, George Olah is actually distinctive, whose extraordinary examine into tremendous robust acids and their new chemistry yielded what's now generally called superacidic "magic acid chemistry. a lifetime of Magic Chemistry is an intimate examine the numerous trips that George Olah has traveled-from his early learn and instructing in Hungary, to his movement to North the United States the place, in the course of his years in undefined, he persevered his examine of the elusive cations of carbon, to his go back to academia in Cleveland, and, eventually, his movement to la, the place he equipped the Loker Hydrocarbon examine Institute to discover new strategies to the grave challenge of the world's diminishing normal oil and fuel assets and to mitigate international warming through recycling carbon dioxide into hydrocarbon fuels and items. Professor Olah invitations the reader to benefit from the tale of his striking path-marked via labor, mind's eye, and unending quests for discovery-which finally ended in the Nobel Prize. Intertwining his study and instructing with a distinct own writing type really makes a lifetime of Magic Chemistry an attractive learn. His autobiography not just touches on his exhilarating existence and pursuit for brand new chemistry but in addition displays at the broader which means ofscience in our perpetual look for figuring out and information.

This was probably when I first experienced the excitement of some of the magic of chemistry. For example, we observed with fascination bubbles of carbon dioxide evolving when we dropped some sodium bicarbonate into vinegar or muriatic acid. Little did I expect to repeat G R O W I N G U P I N H U N G A RY ࡗ 45 this experiment with superacidic ‘‘magic acid’’ years later, when, unexpectedly, no bubbles were formed (see Chapter 8). After going through some of the routine experiments described in the manual that came with the chemistry set, we boldly advanced to more interesting ‘‘individual’’ experiments.

Budapest between the two World Wars was a vibrant, cultured city with excellent theaters, concert halls, opera house, and museums. The city consisted of ten districts. The working-class industrial outskirts of Pest had their row-houses, whereas the middle-class inner city had quite imposing apartment buildings. The upper classes and aristocracy lived in their villas in the hills of Buda. Some of the social separation, however, was mitigated in the schools. There were remarkably good schools in Budapest, although as with much else it cannot be said that there was a uniformly high level of G R O W I N G U P I N H U N G A RY ࡗ 41 education across the country.
