The universality of reason, and, in counterpoint, the universality of violence set about an inescapable series of consequences, which then will itself have a universal scope. The process of scientific inquiry, because it brings to light the unavoidability, the very necessity of this chain of consequences, also shows that it will shape the character of politics always and all the time.

This is why, as will be demonstrated later on, the critiques of realism can assume that their response to this literature also speaks to the nature of international relations as such, and thus does not require further nuances of context in dealing with the character of international politics in the non-Western world. This is, in truth, the strength of the realist tradition: it presents itself as bringing to light, for every one of us in the field, the very essence of international politics throughout the entire world.
