Because we assume that most readers of this book are preparing learning programs for adults and university-age learners, we focus our discussion on philosophies of adult learning. In the following sections, we specifically discuss five major philosophies underlying adult education. These include (1) liberal adult education (a popular philosophy underlying education in colleges and universities); three philosophies that dominate corporate training, including (2) progressive adult education; (3) behaviorism; and (4) humanistic adult education; and the lesser known, but equally influential philosophy, (5) radical adult education.
First is Moore’s model of interaction, which draws distinctions among three types of interaction: learner-content interaction, learner-instructor interaction, and learnerlearner interaction.
